Migration
Moving a board without losing what it earned
A job board that has been running for years has accumulated something worth keeping: search position, links shared by email and on LinkedIn, and addresses candidates have bookmarked. A migration that ignores all three throws it away on day one.
Watch for
The three things that get thrown away
Each one is avoidable, and each one is usually lost by not thinking about it rather than by deciding to.
- The addresses. If every role gets a new URL and nothing points the old ones at the new ones, every link ever shared breaks at once and the position those pages held goes with them.
- The closed roles. A board with history has far more closed roles than open ones, and those pages often hold the most accumulated search position. Deleting them is the single most common migration mistake.
- The applications in flight. Candidates apply during a migration. Proving the new path reaches Bullhorn before the old one is switched off is the difference between a quiet cutover and a week of apologies.
